2002 yearbooks are in!

Thank you to all the people who helped make The 2002 Heuveltonian possible. It could not have happened without the caring Heuvelton community supporting the yearbook by buying ads and buying books. Our two editors, Jen Gooshaw and Kristv Fenton are to be congratulated for a job well done. Jen Lalonde is our major ad salesperson, selling $920 worth of ads. The Total cost of the yearbook is $10,973.49. So producing one is no small undertaking. Thanks, also, to businesses who bought ads, to Steve Heaton of The Ogdensburg Journal who supplied us with copies of his photography, and to Sharon Murdock for copying all those proofs that had to be returned to State College, PA.

There are only a few extra copies for sale, at a cost of $25 each. Please see Mrs. Kenny, in the High School Library, to get your book.

Dr. Richard Partch Visits HCS

This past month, Heuvelton Central Biology and Chemistry students were afforded the opportunity to hear a presentation by Dr. Richard Partch regarding Chemical Control of Drug Overdoses: New Science for Saving Lives.

It was pointed out that humans are exposed daily to a wide variety of chemicals. All of them are toxic if taken or administrated in high enough concentration Some are contracted on purpose while others appear unexpectedly. On the street the word "drug" implies a chemical used by addicts but there are several "drugs" that are therapeutic and used for legitimate medicine to treat disease, and sometimes these latter chemicals are accidentally administered in overdose and cause death.

Research is being carried out by a team of scientists including chemist Richard Partch at Clarkson and the University of Florida to prepare a variety of very small particles that may serve to remove three prescription drugs from the bloodstream that are frequently overdosed even under a doctor's care. The plan is to employ emulsion as well as powder technology to create new injectable material that will be able to interact with one or more of the three drugs and thereby reduce their concentration to a safe level. The basic scientific principles included in the presentation were 1) atomic and molecular structure, 2) solubility of chemicals in water versus organic oils, and 3) interaction between chemical species having opposite charges. The overall area is classified as fine particle technology and in this context it is being applied to solve an important biomedical problem.

Opportunities such as this indicate the potential within our immediate area for invaluable educational resources. Many thanks to Professor Partch for making himself available during his busy schedule to offer his services. Appreciation is also extended to Mrs. Nancy Putman, Mr. Bob Kennedy and Mr. Richard Moore for helping coordinate this opportunity.
